Smart Waste Bins Are Popping Up In More Areas Of Downtown Brooklyn

BROOKLYN – Smart waste bins are popping up in more areas of Downtown Brooklyn.

Members of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership joined City Councilwoman Laurie Combo, National Grid and business group BigBelly to announce the expansion.

The new waste receptacles not only help with recycling and keeping the streets cleaner, but will also send back data to the city when it is time to be emptied. The bins work with a sensor that compacts trash and pushes it down, but won’t let it spill out. They are also connected to a cloud the allows the city to be aware of the conditions at all times.

The high-tech bins are already in use in some parts of Downtown Brooklyn, such as the MetroTech Center. The bins will now be installed in the Atlantic Terminal area.
